Steve began his international work when hearing a talk about the lack of services in Central America in 2009. He also went to Haiti to aid in the earthquake relief where nearly 4000 amputees were the result of the devestation. Belize has especially become a regular trip, as relationships have developed, and we have even taken other friends to become part of the mission. Most recent Steve was asked to travel to the Phillipines with Human Engineers and again established new friendships. They are soon to start a school where Steve may have an opportunity to teach aspiring prosthetists.
The point of these missions, to give to those who otherwise would have no opportunity to receive care. “We live in such a hectic environment, where we are all so busy. As clinicians, and even our clients, we worry about how long will it take, how much will it cost, is this the best thing for me? And then I travel to these places, and see just how simple life can be. And how grateful they are to receive anything. It makes me realize how blessed we are to live in the US. And now it is a priority, I hope to continue these missions througout my career.”
